Salads come and go. Appetizers are a nice way to get things started, but they always leave you wanting more. The main course? For many, that is just a way to put off the BEST course – desserts. No matter how large, filling, or decadent, the previous courses were, people always seem to have room left for dessert. Cakes, cookies, brownies, ice cream, pies, the variety is extensive. Adding some spice to your dessert is a great way to shake things up even more! It is a trend that is sweeping the globe, and we couldn’t be more delighted.
The Spice of Life
If you are reading a recipe for a dessert, and you come across an ingredient like chipotle peppers, or cayenne, you may do a double take. Don’t let yourself be scared off. Adding the correct pepper, or incorporating a bit of spice, can actually make a dessert more rich, flavorful, and delicious. Heat has an uncanny way of playing up the dark, earthy flavors of chocolate, or invigorating the rich milky goodness of ice cream.
Rich and Spicy Brownies
If you are looking for a standard dessert to spice up, brownies are a great candidate. Brownies are already dense, gooey, rich globs of chocolaty delight. Sometimes they can be a little too rich and dense. The guajillo chili is a mild to hot peppers that sees frequent use in Mexican cuisine. It’s rich, warm, and bright flavor pairs excellently with cinnamon. Use these two spices together in your next batch of brownies, to create a dessert that is out-of-this-world delicious.
A Spicy Chocolate Milkshake
Milkshakes are typically cool, creamy, and refreshing. These milkshakes are more of a complex flavor explosion. Cayenne pepper plays off of both the chocolate and dairy ingredients in a milk shake. The milkshake not only taste chocolatier, but the warmth of the spice will be invigorating. The best part? Making a spicy milkshake takes almost no extra work at all. Add ¼ – ¾ a teaspoon of ground cayenne to your favorite milkshake recipe, and enjoy!
