Have you ever been cooking or planning a recipe, when you were told to grab a kitchen utensils you didn’t have? Or perhaps you are moving into a new home, or are sending one of your kids off to college. Either way, if you are stocking up a brand new kitchen, or simply taking stock of yours, you should make sure you have all of these kitchen essentials.
Starting your Checklist
Starting your kitchen checklist can seem a little overwhelming at first. The key is to break the job up. Separate things into categories. You can divide kitchen supplies up into four major categories: prepware, cookware, bakeware, and tools. Of course there are literally hundreds of kitchen tools, utensils and toys you can buy, so figuring out which ones really matter can be the hard part.
Prepware: These are all the thing you need to get started cooking your meal. First off, you need to make sure you have a good, sharp set of knives. Without them, there might not be a single recipe on the planet you can prepare. A cutting board and a can opener are the next two items to add to the list. A cheese grater and a vegetable peeler are not essentials, but they are very nice to have around.
Cookware: Cookware is really essential. Without pots, pans, skillets, frying pans, and sauté pans, you are not going to be able to cook a thing. Make sure you have a good variety of pots and pans, at least a small, medium, and large version of each.
Bakeware: Baking is all about precision. You are going to need most of these items when it comes time to bake as well. Measuring spoons and measure cups need to be on your shopping list. You should also include a baking pan, a baking dish and a few mixing bowls of various size.
Tools: Tools don’t just belong in the garage, they have a place in the kitchen soon. The essential items here are going to be salt and pepper shakers, tongs, a spatula, and a pair of oven mitts.
Well that wasn’t too bad was it? You can always expand from here, but as long as you have most of these items in your kitchen, the only thing holding you back is going to be your own skill.
